What Will Your Legacy Be?

Greetings in the Strong Name of Jesus!

Psalm 39:4-5 - “Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life.  You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you.  Each man's life is but a breath.” NIV

I once preached a sermon on the topic of “Legacy”.  I simply asked the question; “What is the legacy you are leaving behind?”  This Psalm says our life is but a “breath”.  Take a moment - breath in and breath out.  In the whole scheme of things your life just was. Wow - what a thought.  In the time it took you to take that breath, how much time did you give to thinking about anything - let alone what kind of legacy you leave.  Pretty short, eh?

I guess it is important for us to give thought to our legacy.  What will people say about you when you die?  What will your children say about you as they gather to remember you?  And most importantly, what will God say as you enter into eternity?  I think I know what some will say about me, but I would rather not think about it.  We all have some of those don’t we?  I am pretty sure what my family will say about me, at least I like to think I know.  I know of at least one saint in Heaven who may say some good things about me when I get there - my mom.  But what will God say?  I know what I want to hear; “Well done”.  So how can I be sure to hear those words?

Matthew 22:37-40 - “Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'   This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."  NIV   That says it pretty good doesn’t’ it?  If I love the Lord with all my heart, I know I will hear and obey because that’s what a love relationship is all about - doing what brings joy to the heart of another.  If I put all my strength into loving Him, then all of my strength will be spent in doing only what brings pleasure to my Lord.  If I use the entirety of my mind to seek Him, then I will be absorbed with finding and doing the perfect will of my Father.  In doing these things I will find it easy to love my neighbor as myself, because it brings pleasure to my Lord and pleasure to me to bring pleasure to my Lord.  That, then is a legacy.

Epitaph - “Here lies Roger Huff, a man who loved God with everything he had...a God Chaser.”  I like that and that is a legacy worth building and leaving.  What will yours read?

You are loved and prayed for,
Pastor Roger
